Email marketing for churches

Email Marketing for Churches

For most churches, email is the most reliable way to reach the whole congregation. It's how members hear about this week's service, upcoming events, volunteer schedules and prayer requests. Many email tools charge a monthly fee based on how many members are on the list. MailAddiction charges only for emails sent, and the first 2,500 each month are free.

What churches send

  • A weekly update: service times, the sermon series, announcements.
  • Event invitations: holiday services, retreats, fundraisers, community meals.
  • Volunteer schedules and reminders for greeters, children's ministry, worship teams.
  • Ministry group emails to smaller lists such as youth parents, choir or small groups.

A weekly email can be written once and scheduled to repeat. Recurring weekly and monthly scheduling are built in, and you can post the same announcement to your church's Facebook page from the same dashboard.

What it costs

A month's price depends on the total emails sent that month (list size × emails sent):

Example monthly costs for a church
ChurchEmails in a monthPrice
300 members, weekly update300 × 4 = 1,200Free
600 members, weekly update600 × 4 = 2,400Free
1,000 members, weekly update1,000 × 4 = 4,000$9.95
2,000 members, weekly update2,000 × 4 = 8,000$14.95
2,000 members, weekly + 2 event invites2,000 × 6 = 12,000$24.95

Months with five Sundays add one more send. There's no charge for keeping members on the list, and no contract. Compare a full year with your current tool in the pay-as-you-go calculator.

Keeping your church email list healthy

  • Collect addresses with permission: visitor cards, a sign-up link on your website, a membership form. Only email people who asked to hear from you.
  • Always include an unsubscribe link. MailAddiction adds unsubscribe handling automatically and removes bounced addresses.
  • Use separate lists for ministries so people only get what's relevant to them.
  • Keep the weekly email short: the top three items first, with links for the rest.

A simple weekly church email

The weekly update works best when it looks the same every week, so people know where to find things. A structure that works for most congregations:

  1. Subject line with the date and the one big item, for example “This Sunday: baptism service + youth retreat sign-ups”.
  2. This Sunday: service times, the sermon title or series, anything different about the morning.
  3. Coming up: two or three events with dates and a link to sign up.
  4. Volunteers needed: the specific roles and dates, with a reply-to contact.
  5. Prayer and care: how to share a request or get pastoral care.
  6. Giving: a short line and a link, the same place every week.

Save it as a template, then each week you only change the details. AI writing help can draft the event blurbs and subject lines from a few notes, and you edit before it goes out.

Why per-send pricing suits churches

Church email volume isn't steady. Summer is quieter, while Advent, Easter and the start of the school year are busy, with extra event emails and ministry updates. With per-send pricing the bill follows that rhythm: a quiet month with only the weekly update for a 500-person congregation costs nothing, and a busy month costs one flat tier price. You're also never charged for people who are on the list but rarely open, such as former members or seasonal visitors, so you don't have to prune the list just to keep costs down.

Getting started in an afternoon

  1. Export your member emails from your church management system or spreadsheet as a CSV file.
  2. Create a free MailAddiction account (no credit card needed) and upload the list.
  3. Build your weekly template and set it to repeat every week.
  4. Send a test to a couple of staff members, then schedule Sunday's update.
